Choosing the Right Motor Driver for Your Project

Picking the right motor driver can make or break your robotics project. Too weak and you'll burn it out; too powerful and you're wasting money and space.

The Three Most Popular Options

L298N — The Workhorse

The L298N is the go-to for beginners. It's cheap, well-documented, and can handle two DC motors or one stepper motor.

Specs:

  • Max voltage: 46V
  • Max current: 2A per channel
  • Logic voltage: 5V
  • Efficiency: ~60-70% (H-bridge with BJTs)

Best for: Simple DC motor projects, line-following robots, basic conveyor systems.

Watch out: The L298N uses bipolar junction transistors, which means significant voltage drop (1.4V–2V). At 2A, you're dissipating 3-4W as heat. The heatsink is not optional.

TB6612FNG — The Efficient Choice

Toshiba's TB6612FNG uses MOSFETs instead of BJTs, dramatically improving efficiency.

Specs:

  • Max voltage: 13.5V
  • Max current: 1.2A continuous (3.2A peak)
  • Logic voltage: 2.7V–5.5V
  • Efficiency: ~90-95%

Best for: Battery-powered robots, drones, anything where power efficiency matters.

A4988 — The Stepper Specialist

The A4988 is purpose-built for stepper motors, with microstepping support up to 1/16 step.

Specs:

  • Max voltage: 35V
  • Max current: 2A per phase (with heatsink)
  • Microstepping: Full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16

Best for: 3D printers, CNC machines, camera sliders, precision positioning.
